The former Columbus monument was removed in July 2020. The future of the site where it stood is still in flux and up for debate.. The site is very public facing and borders many famous Chicago landmarks and institutions.
This creates a delicate situation where many parties desire representation and input in its future. While this site technically falls under the upcoming Grant Park Framework Plan, we believe it deserves special consideration.
As part of this debate, GoArchitect is initiating an educational research project to survey the Chicago community about what you would like to see happen with this site. This case study is ongoing and purely for educational exploration. We have not been contracted by the Chicago Parks District or any other organization. We just love Chicago and want to see our home flourish.
The site has been empty since 2020 with no activity of any kind for many years. The former statue pedestal is wrapped in plastic and the general area looks unkempt.
In the spirit of getting the conversation started, GoArchitect did an educational design exercise to show what is possible.
Welcome to Discovery Park; the newest interactive and family friendly area downtown. Drawing inspiration from the Shedd Aquarium, Lake, and Field Museum; Discovery Park invites families from around the world to learn about science and exploration in an interactive and playful way.
The giant turtle play structure features many educational and interactive activities for children to explore. It's unique design and theming acts as a perfect stopover for tourists and locals heading to the museums and lakefront.
Please join in by taking the survey and sharing it with fellow Chicagoans. Thank you!
